STEM

STEM encapsulates the spirit of ingenuity, rooted in wonder and a disposition toward solving problems and discovering improvements that make our lives better and economy stronger. It relies on collaborative problem solving, a commitment to sound reasoning, ethical applications of science and harnessing of the powerful tools of mathematics and technology.
The Rationale for MiSTEM
All citizens in Michigan have the opportunity to harness the power of the STEM disciplines to improve their physical and economic wellbeing and provide a positive contribution to an increasing complicated and technology dependent society. To gain such prowess, students need confidence that they can comprehend and use mathematics and science. They need to see that the doors to STEM professions are open to them – ALL of them. More than anything, they need their K12 education to preserve and inspire their innate sense of wonder and appreciation for the complexities of nature and the human designed world.
Our Impact
The impact made on our students’ confidence and positive disposition toward STEM disciplines is the product of the various interrelated STEM Education Teams at Oakland Schools, school district administrators and teachers, our university and community college partners, STEM employers, Oakland County Government and the many informal STEM educators and community contributors in our county.

About Oakland MiSTEM Network
The Oakland MiSTEM Region is one of 16 that make up the MiSTEM Network. Our direction is set by a Governor appointed board who has established four pillars that will supports efforts aimed at developing a strong and empowering STEM identity in all students.

Active Programs and Grants
MiSTEM Council Grants
Code.org: Professional learning for high School and middle school teachers to use Code.org courses, including AP Computer Science Principles.
Modeling in Michigan: Professional learning and curriculum development for middle school and high school science teachers.
Modeling with MiSTAR: Professional learning for middle school MiSTAR users that includes Modeling pedagogy and immersion learning.
Math Recovery: Professional learning for K-3 teachers using math recovery approaches.
Bosch Community Fund
Modeling Mobility: In partnership with the Square One Educational Network Modeling in Michigan is infusing coding, problem solving and connected and automated vehicle technology into core high school physical science courses.
MiSTEM Region Funds
Career Epilogs for MiSTAR Units: In association with the Modeling with MiSTAR workshop we have built Career Epilogs so middle school students can conduct career exploration in the contexts of the their science courses.
Math Recovery: to enhance the sustainability of Math Recovery support in our county, region funds complement the council grant by investing in leadership capacity in our districts and our ISD.
NGSx: To support the critical need for science educators, K-12, to realize the vision of Michigan’s NGSS inspired science standards.
Science Classroom Learning Labs: Past participants in Modeling Instruction workshop experience follow up experiences using an embedded approach where hosting teachers deliberate with visiting colleagues.
