Oakland Schools and the Oakland Schools Education Foundation is proud to once again bring to your students the opportunity to participate in the Scripps National Spelling Bee program.

The event is now named the Oakland Schools Scripps Regional Spelling Bee.

Late in 2017, executives at The Oakland Press announced they would be unable to continue sponsorship of the event, which the company had been overseeing for 22 years.

“We understand the importance of the event and wanted to keep it going,” said Oakland Schools Superintendent Dr. Wanda Cook-Robinson.

in 2017, over 80 elementary and middle school students from all over Oakland County competed in the Bee.

The winner receives a trophy and an automatic invite to the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

This award, established in 1990, is a tribute to Betty Campion, a former Oakland Schools (1978-1992) and Walled Lake Board of Education (10 years) trustee, and recognizes four winners from those nominated for the honor (one in each quadrant of Oakland County).

Candidates must be employed in a support position in a local district – transportation, maintenance, custodial, office personnel, food services, or professional support to teachers (including para-educators).

The winners will each receive a $500 cash award from the Oakland Schools Education Foundation and framed certificate of recognition which will be presented at their local board of education meeting in May or June.

Financial support for the Betty Campion award is provided by the Oakland Schools Education Foundation.

Please note: There is a limit of one nomination per district.

Nominate a colleague

In 1991, a partnership began between Oakland Schools and DENSO International to fund scholarships for students attending Oakland Schools Technical Campuses.

More than $390,000 has been given to students in engineering and technical studies programs who have not only been outstanding scholars, but leaders in and out of the classroom.

Now known as the Scholarships for Success Awards Program, scholarships will range between $500 and $7,500 and will apply to the 2017-2018 academic year.

Scholarship awards are based on interest and participation in Career Technical Education, academic achievement and career goals. Successful applicants may use the scholarship funds at any accredited, post-secondary institution, trade school or apprenticeship program.

In April 2017, OSEF held the first Scholarships for Success gala dinner to raise funds to support this program. Last year's gala was held on April 19, 2018 at Tam O'Shanter Country Club.

Students who were awarded a scholarship were honored on February 26, 2018 at an awards breakfast held at Oakland Schools.

The Michigan Green Schools Program encourages public and private schools to participate in environmentally friendly and energy savings activities.
