Mathematics - EPI ⇄ C2
About EPI⇄C2
The Essential Practices in Instruction leading to Capacity and Coherence (EPI⇄ C2), (referred to as "EPIC"), project has been developed in response to declining performance from 3rd to 6th grade on the MATHEMATICS M-STEP. All Oakland County School Districts and PSAs have access to participate in this project designed to increase an organization's capacity to support effective mathematics practices leading to increased student outcomes in mathematics. Additional differentiated and intensified supports are made available to districts demonstrating the greatest need as demonstrated by 2023-24 M-STEP scores in grades 3 – 6 called EPI⇄C2 + supports.
EPI⇄C2 is designed to be evolving and responsive to the needs of districts with ongoing support that is attentive to local data and the changing landscape of education. Oakland Schools provides opportunities to support leadership teams at the building and district level as well as thoughtfully designed, research-based professional learning to impact classroom level mathematics instructional practices.
EPI⇄C2 Design
This visual illustrates four synergistic levers (systems, administrative leadership, non-administrative leadership, and educator learning) in support of enhanced student outcomes. In EPI⇄C2, we attend to each of these levers while placing particular emphasis on support for non-administrative instructional leaders (NAILs).
Our Goals
EPI⇄C2 is a multi-year countywide mathematics initiative organized around three areas of continuous improvement.
Goal 1: Enhanced, equitable instructional practices grounded in research (focus grades 4th – 6th)
Goal 2: Increased confidence and efficacy of instructional leaders
Goal 3: Increased district system coherence
Professional Learning
EPI⇄C2 Teachers Network
The EPI⇄C2 Teachers Network (T-Net) brings together 4th - 6th grade math teachers, from EPI⇄C2+ districts, who are working toward improving their self-identified problems of practice in the context of their district’s instructional vision. Teachers will collaborate to: set and monitor progress toward instructional goals, collect, analyze, and share teaching/learning artifacts, reflect on the impact of their instruction on student learning, and provide descriptive feedback to peers.
