Legal Requirements for the Common Calendar

In accordance with Michigan Public Act 101 of 2007, all intermediate school districts, in cooperation with their constituent districts, are required to adopt a common school calendar effective July 1, 2008. This law ensures uniformity in key school break periods across all districts within each intermediate school district (ISD).

Each common calendar must:

  • Comply with sections 1284 and 1284b of the School Aid Act
  • Specify the dates for at least the next five years when schools will not be in session for winter and spring holidays.
  • Apply to all public school districts, ISD programs and public school academies (charter schools) operating within the ISD.

Each local district board and the ISD board are responsible for ensuring their school calendars align with the adopted common calendar.

Calendar Approval Process

As the ISD for Oakland County, Oakland Schools, in collaboration with the Oakland County Superintendents Association (OCSA), annually develops a recommendation for the two required holiday breaks, which is then approved by the Oakland Schools Board of Education.

In addition to the two legislated breaks, OCSA recommended that any district with midwinter breaks should schedule them during the third week of February (President’s Day week), regardless of their length (currently, these breaks run from two to five school days). This recommendation is reflected in the five-year calendar.
