Huron Valley Schools’ Teresa Thompson receives Gwisdalla Award for work in special education
Teresa Thompson, director of Student Support Services for Huron Valley Schools, was honored on May 14 with a Gwisdalla Award for her work in the special education field.
The recognition is given out annually by the Special Education Administrators of Oakland County (SEAOC). The Gwisdalla Award was created in honor of Gregory Gwisdalla, who was the director of Special Education at Oakland Schools from 1997-2001.
Under Thompson’s leadership, procedure manuals for Special Education and 504s were created and the work has been sustained by regular review and training of new staff in Huron Valley Schools. Through Thompson’s innovative leadership, Huron Valley has been able to bolster elementary social work help, addressing a critical need for increasing mental health support. Thompson also advocates for many special education policies and best practices at the district and state level.
Thompson is the president of Special Education Administrators of Oakland County (SEAOC). Since coming to Huron Valley Schools, Teri has served as assistant director of Student Support Services, assistant principal at Oak Valley Middle School and principal at both Baker and Johnson elementary schools. She has been director of Student Support Services since 2014.
"Ms. Thompson is an excellent Special Education director,” said Dr. Paul Salah, superintendent of Huron Valley Schools. “She is compassionate, intelligent and exhibits patience as she works through complicated issues. She works hard to live our mission of ‘Inspiring and Building Futures One Student at a Time.’ I am proud to have Teri as part of our Huron Valley administrative team."
Thompson has a Bachelor of Arts Major in Special Education & Psychology from Michigan State University, a Masters of Education from Grand Valley State University and an Education Specialist certification from Oakland University. She also has teaching certification in Social Studies 6-12, Emotional Impairment K-12, Psychology 6-12, and Learning Disabilities K-12. Thompson additionally possesses School Administration and Director of Special Education certifications.
