Huron Valley Schools’ Teresa Thompson receives Gwisdalla Award for work in special education

Teresa Thompson, director of Student Support Services for Huron Valley Schools, was honored on May 14 with a Gwisdalla Award for her work in the special education field.

The recognition is given out annually by the Special Education Administrators of Oakland County (SEAOC). The Gwisdalla Award was created in honor of Gregory Gwisdalla, who was the director of Special Education at Oakland Schools from 1997-2001.

Under Thompson’s leadership, procedure manuals for Special Education and 504s were created and the work has been sustained by regular review and training of new staff in Huron Valley Schools. Through Thompson’s innovative leadership, Huron Valley has been able to bolster elementary social work help, addressing a critical need for increasing mental health support. Thompson also advocates for many special education policies and best practices at the district and state level.
