CTN provides grant to Oakland Schools’ unique STEM project
Oakland Schools has received a grant of $25,000 from Community Telecommunications Network (CTN) to support an innovative STEM education project in Oakland County, MI.
The funds specifically will be used for Oculus Quest virtual reality headsets and supporting Career Readiness applications for students K-12. This technology will be a welcome addition to Oakland Schools’ STEMi Mobile Innovation Station, a 1,000-square-foot customized semi that will serve as a mobile lab and be made available to students in Oakland County school districts.
Recent developments have accelerated the transition to Industry 4.0 and placed a larger emphasis on related emerging technologies. With that in mind, Oakland Schools will use the grant funds to purchase equipment that authentically engages learners in Oakland County in augmented/mixed/virtual reality, cloud computing and smart manufacturing. In order to maximize the impact of the equipment, Oakland Schools will provide support, training and related curriculum development.
“The STEMi will provide an amazing learning experience and a chance for students to connect their academic path with career opportunities,” said Phil Kimmel, Oakland Schools’ STEM consultant. “The funds will help maximize access and impact, as we build out a robust STEM equipment check out system for schools called STEMco.”
“Oakland Schools and CTN are committed to effectively using digital technologies to enhance learning for all students,” said Kyle Kilpatrick, Oakland Schools’ STEM consultant. “CTN’s generous support of Oakland Schools will provide all learners in the county an opportunity to engage with immersive media while exploring in-demand careers.”
