Common Calendar
Signed by Governor Jennifer Granholm into law on October 1, 2007, Public Act 101, MCL380.1284a.
- Be in compliance with sections 1284 and 1284b of the School Aid Act
- Identify the dates for at least the next five years when schools will not be in session for a winter holiday and spring holiday.
Common school calendars were required to be in place for the 2008-2009 school year. Districts operating on a trimester system were allowed to apply for a waiver. School districts that bargained a multi-year calendar prior to the legislation being enacted were not required to implement the common calendar until the calendars that were bargained expire. This legislation also applies to public school academies (charter schools).
Oakland Schools, the intermediate school district serving Oakland County's 28 public school districts, worked in cooperation with the Oakland County Superintendents Association (OCSA) and representatives of the county's public school academies to create a recommendation for the two required holiday breaks to be brought to the Oakland Schools Board of Education on January 15, 2008. In addition to the two legislated breaks, OCSA recommended that those districts with midwinter breaks should schedule them during the third week of February, President’s Day week, regardless of their length (currently, these breaks run from two-five school days). This recommendation is reflected in the five year calendar.
On February 19, 2019 the Oakland Schools Board of Education approved the amendment to the Oakland County Common Calendar to move the spring break up a week starting with the 2019-2020 school year. This provides a week between spring break and the MDE's testing schedule. Because the calendar showed five years out, districts were given until the 2023-2024 school year to adopt the change.
The Oakland Schools Board of Education updates the calendar each year by approving a subsequent school year, so the calendar always shows five years in the future. The calendar approval was on June 19, 2023, to update the calendar through 2028-2029. In addition, to ensure there is a week between spring break and MDE’s anticipated testing schedule, spring break for the 2024-2025 school year was moved to March 24-28, 2025; however, Oakland Schools has a waiver to allow spring break to be March 31-April 4, 2025.
On June 3, 2024, the Oakland Schools Board of Education approved the 5 Year School Calendar for 2026-2030 (also known as the Common Calendar). For the 2029-2030 school year, Winter Break is December 24, 2029 through January 4th, 2030. Suggested Mid-Winter Break is February 18, 2030 through February 22, 2030. Spring Break is March 25, 2030 through March 29, 2030.

Please note: Some districts seek a waiver to modify their calendar. It is always best to check with your local district to determine their calendar.
