The social studies are comprised of four distinct disciplines: history, geography, civics, and economics. Oakland Schools offers consulting services in curriculum, instruction, and assessment, as well as provides support materials for grades kindergarten through high school. Our consultants provide professional development sessions on instruction for specific grade levels and courses, as well as content literacy at the secondary level. Oakland Schools provides advice to local districts about available resources in the field of social studies and has created a model curriculum with sample lesson plans for elementary and secondary teachers grounded in research and best practices available at www.micitizenshipcurriculum.org. Oakland Schools also hosts a countywide advisory council for local districts throughout the year to assist schools in keeping current with changes at the local, state, and national levels, as well as research in the field of history and social studies education. Through the Oakland County Social Studies Council, local districts provide feedback to Oakland Schools that enables the intermediate school district to be responsive to local district needs.
