Approximately seventy percent of Oakland County students arrive at kindergarten with preschool experience. Every local school district in Oakland County offers Michigan School Readiness Programs (MSRP), Head Start and/or tuition-based community education preschool and child-care in addition to early intervention and preschool special education programs. The focus of this theme is to provide on-going staff development, program and curriculum support to these programs as well as to programs serving children in kindergarten through second grade. It is related to the Oakland Schools' strategic theme of Improving Teaching and Learning as we help teachers prepare all students to meet high standards of academic achievement.

Michigan Literacy Progress Profile (MLPP) - The MLPP Prek-3rd grade is an initiative developed by the Michigan Department of Education to improve student achievement in early literacy. It focuses on using student data to make instructional decisions for individuals and small groups of students. Training is provided on a wide range of literacy assessments, data analysis and use in instructional planning and research based instructional strategies. The 35-hour training program includes both core components and electives. This training is recommended for all early literacy teachers.
The Early Childhood Team of Oakland Schools is pleased to offer a series of sessions focusing on strategies for improving early literacy in children from preschool through grade three. These sessions are open to all staff in Oakland County and have been designed to support training in the Michigan Literacy Progress Profile (MLPP).
Foundations - Foundations is a newly copyrighted version of the original LETRS program developed by Dr. Louisa Moats and published by Sopris West. It is for use only in Michigan to fulfill the requirements of Michigan's Reading First Grant. The developers of LETRS believe that to reach all learners, teachers must have a deep theoretical, linguistically based understanding of how students learn to read and write. Foundations will help provide teachers with the deep knowledge and understanding they need to match the right strategy with the right child at the right time.
