Positive Behavior Support for Young Children
Positive Behavior Support for Young Children (PBSYC) is a proactive and positive approach used by staff, parents, and community agencies to promote successful behavior and learning at home and at school for all students.
Oakland Schools provides coaching, support and resources to Positive Behavior Support for Young Children (PBSYC) public school district partnership sites throughout Oakland County. With the support of Oakland Schools staff, these partnership sites are implementing program wide positive behavior support by establishing building teams, creating and teaching school wide rules/expectations, providing consistent systems and routines, and developing a program wide referral process for children who exhibit challenging behaviors.
PBSYC is not a specific practice or curriculum. It’s a general approach to supporting social and emotional development, teaching expectations for appropriate behavior and preventing challenging behavior.
PBSYC is based on a long history of behavioral practices and effective instructional design and strategies.
PBSYC prevents and reduces the use of challenging behavior by:
· Nurturing healthy relationships between children, teachers, and families
· Arranging and providing a classroom environment which meets the Michigan Early Childhood Standards of Quality
· Using developmentally appropriate instruction
· Teaching social skills and how to handle/express strong emotions in socially appropriate ways.
· Providing positive and encouraging feedback to children about behavior
· Understanding specific ways to address and individualize plans for challenging behaviors
· Using data to make decisions and monitor progress
