2012 Oakland County Outstanding Teacher of the Year

For 25 years, Oakland Schools has recognized exemplary Oakland County public school district teachers in three categories: Elementary, Middle School and High School. Each district may submit one nominee in each category. Awards are presented to honor and reward Oakland county teachers who have achieved, through their effort and example, the highest standards of excellence in their profession. All nominees are celebrated and winner in each category receives a check for $2,000. This year’s program is sponsored by Oakland Schools, the Oakland Schools Education Foundation and HAP. 2012 Betty Campion Distinguished Support Service Award
This award, established in 1990, is a tribute to Betty Campion, a former Oakland Schools (1978-1992) and Walled Lake Board of Education (10 years) trustee, and recognizes one winner from those nominated for the honor. Candidates must be employed in a support position in a local district – transportation, maintenance, custodial, office personnel, food services, or professional support to teachers (including para-educators). The winner will receive a $250 cash award from the Oakland Schools Education Foundation and framed certificate of recognition which will be presented at his/her local board of education meeting in May or June. Financial support for the Betty Campion award is provided by the Oakland Schools Education Foundation. Please note: There is a limit of one nomination per district.

2012 Excellence in Education (in partnership with the Oakland Press)

This is the 20th year that the Excellence in Education Awards have been presented to outstanding high school seniors and educational programs. The program is a partnership between the Oakland Press and Oakland Schools, the intermediate school district serving Oakland County schools. Awards are presented to the top three nominees in two categories: Outstanding High School Senior and K-12 Educational Innovation Program.(Please note: High school seniors must demonstrate high academic and school-related achievements in the face of personal challenges. Students must have a minimum 3.0 high school GPA.)

 

Public school districts, public school academies and nonpublic schools may each nominate one outstanding high school senior per high school and up to three exemplary school program per district (one per PSA and nonpublic school). Three students and three programs will be recognized, with a top winner in both categories. The Oakland Press will award the top high school senior with a check for $800; the second place student will receive $500 and the third place student will receive $350. The top educational program selected by the judges will receive a donation of $1,000 to the school to be used toward continuing the program. The second place program will receive $750 and third place will receive $500.

2010-2011 Michigan Teacher of the Year

Sponsored by the Michigan Department of Education with corporate support from MEEMIC, the Michigan Teacher of the Year (MTOY) program selects one qualified teacher to serve as an ambassador for all Michigan teachers for one year, calling positive attention to education as an honorable profession, urging students and others to consider teaching as their chosen profession. The MTOY works to elevate the teaching profession and provides numerous opportunities for the selected teacher to learn and grow.

  • Regional coordinators review applications between December 10-February 25
  • Top three regional applications submitted to MDE by March 1
  • MDE panel narrows applications to top four by March 31
  • Top applicants interviewed in April
  • Winner announced in April/May
  • MTOY responsibilities begin in August 2011 through July 2012
