Team Training and In Situ Simulation in Healthcare

CODE BLUE - CODE BLUE – ICU!
We’ve all watched what happens on Grey’s Anatomy or other medical dramas when an emergency patient code is called.  Crisis team personnel rush to the location, the crash cart is mobilized and screeches to a halt at the patient’s bedside.  Pulse, heart rhythm and breathing are quickly assessed, monitors hooked up, and new IV sites to push meds are located.  Respiratory team members provide oxygen, IV’s are started and labs drawn – all in a matter of minutes. The doctor in charge gives orders based on the information gathered by the team.  What is the heart doing?  Is there a life threatening arrhythmia?  Is it a rhythm that can be shocked?  Suddenly the word “CLEAR!!!” rings through the air…

Emergency situations like this happen in hospitals everyday.  However, what may seem like utter chaos to an onlooker is really a highly orchestrated healthcare team working in unison to provide life saving interventions for their patients.  Dr. James Robbins invites you to join him for a highly interactive, hands-on session on how medical teams are trained to respond to all situations in a healthcare setting.  Simulations of patient care experiences will be conducted by student teams in the Surgical Learning Center in the same manner that actual medical personnel are trained.

This session is for anyone considering a career in healthcare.  Regardless of career path, you will experience the communication challenges and need for teamwork that face healthcare professionals on a daily basis.

James Robbins, M.D. is the Medical Director of the Applebaum Surgical Learning Center. In that capacity, he has oversight responsibilities for the various educational programs in the center. Dr. Robbins also continues an active practice in general surgery, trauma surgery, and surgical critical care. His other leadership responsibilities at Beaumont include Surgical Clerkship Director for medical students (Wayne State University and future Oakland University students), Chairman of the Corporate Transfusion Committee, and Representative of the medical staff as Member at Large.
