Business Professionals of America is a nationally recognized co-curricluar career and technical organization for high school studetns preparing for careers in business, marketing and information technology.  The mission of Business Professionals of America is to contribute to the preparation of a world-class workforce through the advancement of leadership, academic, citizenship, and technological skills.

 

At this year's Regional Leadership Conference in Grand Rapids:

George Aiken of Lake Orion HS won 1st Place in Computer Security, another 1st Place in Technology Concepts and 3rd Place in Java Programming.

 

Tyler Downie of Lake Orion HS won 1st Place in C++ Programming and 2nd Place in Java Programming.

 

Jeremy Romain of Rochester Adams HS won 2nd Place in PC Servicing & Troubleshooting and 3rd Place in Computer Security.

 

Brandon Stephens of Lake Orion HS won 3rd Place in PC Servicing & Troubleshooting and 4th Place in Java Programming.

 

Mitchell Williams III of Avondale HS won 4th Place in Information Technology Concepts.

The mission of F.I.R.S.T. Robotics is "to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders, by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, engineering and technology skills, that inspire innovation, and that foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication, and leadership."

 

This year the Juggernauts (Team #1) seeded 8th and were semifinalists at the Kettering District Competition.

At Kettering, they also won a Judges Award.

 

At the Lansing District Competition, they  seeded 2nd, were finalists, and won another Judges Award.

On March 5th thru 7th, 2009, several students from EET and BMMT participated in the Global Trade Mission held at Oakland Community College.  Teamed with other high school area students, they were given the challenge to export a product or service outside of the United States.  During the three day event, they researched, brainstormed and created their unique business export plan and then presented it to an expert business panel.

HOSA is "a student organization whose mission is to promote career opportunities in health care and to enhance the delivery of quality health care to all people."

 

This year at the regional competion:

Monica Jones won 1st Place in the Knowledge test for Human Growth and Development

Samantha Burks took 3rd Place in Nursing Assisting.

Ayana White took 3rd Place and Breai Jones was a finalists in Physical Therapy.

MITES is "a non-profit organization with over 600 members and volunteers who believe in the power of hands-on, relevant, and real-world learning."  MITES sponsors competitions in the industrial and applied arts.

 

Students did not participate in MITES competitions this year.

The National Technical Honor Society is a very prestigious society whose only purpose is to provide honor and recognition to students who demonstrate the highest standard of personal and professional conduct.

Oakland County Competitive Robotics Association Oakland County Competitive Robotics Association - website

 

OCCRA is a competition for sparking excitement about engineering.  Designing and building a robot as a unique solution to a game challenge, driving the robot, and being caught up in the intensity of the matches, stimulates enthusiasm for engineering, math and science.  Learning to work effectively as a team also helps lead to success.

 

This year, team #1 (the Juggernauts) were Foundation Award finalists.

 

They also won a Judges Award at the Walled Lake Tournament.

Their VEX robot helped them to win a VEX Award at both the Birmingham Tournament and the County Championship at Royal Oak High School.

They also earned the Strategic Design Award at the Holly Tournament.

 

ProStart ProStart - website

 

Prostart is a two-year curriuculm for our Culinary Arts students.  Not only do they learn about the art of Culinary Arts, but they gain experience in the field and can earn recognition through competition.

 

At the State competition in Lansing, the marketing team of Amber Carmack, Alyssa Villotti, Nicole Naumann, and Elizabeth Stammen took 4th Place.

The Management team of Kristina Long, Alex Gutierrez, Elizabeth Stammen, and Kristen Carroll took 9th Place.

 

SAE - Micro Electric Vehicle Competition SAE's Micro Electric Vehicle Competition - flyer

 

Teams of students work together to design and build the fastest car to pull a trailer up a ramp.  The vehicle is completely battery powered.

 

This year, our school won 1st Place Overall, which came with a $1,000 cash prize.

 

The team of Jonathan Thornton, John Thornton, and Chris Vogler won 1st Place for Team Design.

This award had a $100 cash prize for the team.

They also won 1st Place for Team Performance, and $75 cash each.

 

The team of Ryan Baker, Andrew Cairns, Terry Norris, and Isaiah Robb won 3rd Place for Team Performance and $25 each.

 Welding Competitons

 

At the Boilermakers Welding Invitational, Chris Noble took 9th Place.

 

At the American Welding Society competition, Tyler Wingerter took 6th Place and Mark Durocher took 8th Place.

 

At the Washtenaw Welding Invitational, both Cory Karkeet, Andrew Korany, and Tyler Wingerter took 2nd Place in their respective competitions.  Brian Geskey took 3rd Place in the Beginning TIG competition.

 

At the Ferris Welding Invitational, Paul VanGamper took 1st Place and won a $1000 scholarship.

 

ScholarshipsScholarships

 

 

This year's Denso Scholarship winners were Mya Flentroy (BMMT), Sarah Harper  (EET) and Monica Jones (Health Sciences).

Each student received a $1000 scholarship.

 

Sarah Harper also received a $1000 F.I.R.S.T scholarship from BAE Systems.

She also received another $1000 scholarship from the Lake Orion School District for being an Outstanding Vocational Student.

 

Monica Jones also won the Saint Joseph's Health Care Scholarship and received $1000.

 

This year's Tom Cain Memorial Scholarship winner was Tyler Wingerter (EET).  Tyler recieved $500.

 

Kristin Carroll of Culinary Arts received a $1000 Scholarship from the Lion's Club.

 

Through her participation in SkillsUSA, Kristina Long of Culinary Arts received a $1000 Scholarship to Johnson and Wales University.

 

Paul VanGamper earned a $1000 scholarship by taking first place at the Ferris Welding Invitational.

 

Kenneth Kaminski (OSVDEA) earned a Merit Scholarship to Kettering University as well as a National Co-op Scholarship totalling $16,000 per year.

 

Keon Kashani-Gharavi (OSVDEA) earned earned a Merit Scholarship to Kettering Universtiy for $10,000 per year.

 

Kelsey Roys (OSVDEA) earned a Merit Scholarship to Kettering University for $10,000 per year.

 

James Meintjes (OSVDEA) earned a Merit Scholarship to Kettering University for $10,000 per year.

 

Jesse Giles (OSVDEA) received the Chick Evans Memorial Scholarship, which is a full ride scholarship.  Jesse plans on attending Michigan State University.

 

Jamond Chatmon (OSVDEA) earned a $5,000 per year scholarship to Lawrence Technological University.

 

Other Awards

 

Katlyn Hopper was awarded the Career and Technical Recognition Award for being an outstanding student as the Technical Campus.
