Welcome to the Oakland Schools' Michigan Green Schools Program
for all of Oakland County!
Program History
This program began as a grassroots initiative at Hartland High School in Livingston County in 2005. This effort resulted in Governor Jennifer Granholm signing Public Act 146 into law in May of 2006.
Oakland County became involved with this program in the 2007-2008 school year, and awarded the Michigan Green School designation to 45 public and private schools during the first year. Oakland County had more schools participate than any other county in the state.
In 2008-2009 Oakland County partnered with Oakland Schools and more than doubled the number and awarded the Michigan Green School designation to 98 public and private schools. Thirty-two of those schools attained the higher designation, the Emerald status.
For 2009-2010 Oakland Schools took the lead on this project with Oakland County's help. At this year's awards ceremony 171 Oakland County schools (up from 98 last year, a 74% increase), have earned the Michigan Green School designation. Please note that 55 of the schools also received the special designation of Emerald status by successfully earning an additional 15 points for extra activities and 72 schools earned the new Evergreen status, by receiving an extra 20 points. Of the 171 participating schools, 74 returned from last year.
For 2010-2011 Oakland Schools and Oakland County have designated 191 schools a Michigan Green School. There were 64 schools that also received the special designation of Emerald status by successfully earning an additional 15 points for extra activities and 91 schools earned the Evergreen status, by receiving an extra 20 points. The awards ceremony was held at Oakland Schools on May 25, 2011.
