Closing the Achievement Gap
|
|
|
The
Gap in achievement between Black/Latino and White/Asian students remain
a persistent problem. Researchers Dr. Katie Haycock of the Educational
Trust and Dr. Ron Ferguson of Harvard University report the average
12th grade Black or Latino student scores on standardized tests at a
level similar to the average White student. This fact remains constant
throughout all socio-economic levels.
Oakland
School is committed to improving the achievement of all Oakland County
students. It is our job as educators to equip ourselves to facilitate
the diverse learning needs, in a culturally responsive environment, of
our 21st century population.
"I really believe that each of us must
come to care about everyone else's children. We must come to see that
the well-being of our own individual children is ultimately linked to
the well-being of all other people's children. After all, when one of
our own children needs life-saving surgery, someone else's child will
perform it; when one of our own children is threatened or harmed by
violence on the streets, someone else's child will commit it. The good
life for our own children can only be secured if it is also secured for
all other people's children. But to worry about all other people's
children is not just a practical or strategic matter; it is a moral and
ethical one; to strive for the well-being of all other people's
children is also right." --Lillian Katz, former director of the ERIC Clearing House on Elementary and Early Childhood Education.
