The Oakland Schools Board of Education hereby notifies residents of its constituent school districts that there is a vacancy on the Oakland Schools Board. To be eligible for consideration, applicants must be U.S. citizens, residents of a constituent district and registered voters. Eligible persons interested in being appointed to fill the vacancy are hereby asked to send a letter of interest, biography, and completed application including two questions to the Oakland Schools Board of Education, Attn: Kim Espejo, 2111 Pontiac Lake Road, Waterford, MI 48328-2736 or email to kim.espejo@oakland.k12.mi.us no later than 4 PM Friday, February 5, 2010. If the vacancy is not filled by March 2, 2010 the State Board of Education will fill the vacancy.

OAKLAND SCHOOLS BOARD BEGINS TRUSTEE REPLACEMENT PROCESS
Public Invited to Apply for Board Opening
WATERFORD, MI – January 19, 2010 -- At a regular meeting tonight, the Oakland Schools Board of Education announced the process it will use to fill the board seat that will be vacated, for personal reasons, by Treasurer Dan Share, effective January 31, 2010. The vacancy will be filled until the next biennial election (June 7, 2010), at which time the vacancy will be filled for the balance of the unexpired term (June 30, 2012).
Mr. Share was appointed to the Oakland Schools Board of Education on March 16, 2004 and was elected to a six-year term on June 5, 2006. Mr. Share was elected to the position of President of the Oakland Schools Board of Education and served in that position from 2005 through 2007. The Board honored Mr. Share’s many contributions to Oakland Schools with a proclamation stating, in part:
“…Whereas, during his tenure on the Intermediate School District Board of Education, Mr. Share contributed significantly to the turnaround for Oakland Schools and to its rededication to service for Oakland County districts and students; and whereas, Mr. Share brought his vast legal expertise and attention to detail to bear on a most careful review of board policies, contracts, real estate transactions, and myriad other legal aspects of board business at Oakland Schools; …and now therefore, be it proclaimed that the Oakland Schools Board of Education and Administration do hereby acknowledge with gratitude the long-standing commitment and many contributions of Daniel Share to Oakland Schools, Birmingham Public Schools and the students of Oakland County.”
The Oakland Schools Board of Education is using the following process to fill the vacancy:
- A public notice will be posted on Sunday, January 24, 2010 in the Oakland Press and Observer-Eccentric, advising the public of the vacancy and the Friday, February 5, 2010 4 PM deadline to submit applications to Oakland Schools. This notice will also be posted on the Oakland Schools website following the January 19, 2010 board meeting.
- Oakland Schools will review each application to verify eligibility. To be eligible for consideration, applicants must be U.S. citizens, residents of a constituent district and registered voters.
- Eligible applicants will be informed of the interview process and meeting date by February 10, 2010.
- On February 15, 2010 at 6 PM, the Oakland Schools Board of Education will convene a special meeting to interview the eligible candidates.
- At its regularly scheduled meeting on February 15, 2010 at 7 PM PM, the Oakland Schools Board of Education will vote on the appointment of a new board member.
- The Board will swear in the selected candidate at a regular meeting on March 1, 2010 at 7 PM. The Board will notify the State Board of Education of the new trustee on March 2, 2010.
The Oakland Schools Board of Education is elected by one vote from each of the 28 local Oakland County school district Boards of Education. On June 7, 2010, there will also be an election for two board positions whose terms expire on June 30, 2010 – those currently held by Vice President Connie R. Williams and Secretary Barb DeMarco.

Election Process:
The Oakland Schools Board of Education is elected by one vote from each of the 28 local Oakland County school district Boards of Education. Elections are held biennially in even years on the first Monday in June.
Meetings:
Oakland Schools Board meetings are held at 7:00 PM on the first and third Monday of each month in conference room A of the Oakland Schools Administration Building located at 2111 Pontiac Lake Road in Waterford, Michigan, unless otherwise posted. Special meetings are scheduled as needed. Meetings are posted and open to the public. Time for public comment is available at every meeting.
Compensation:
Oakland Schools Board Trustees receive $30 per meeting. Meetings are defined as regular and special board meetings, committee meetings, or official Board functions where the Trustee is representing the Board and where his/her attendance is stipulated by official board action. Trustees are reimbursed mileage for such meetings at a rate of non-union employees, calculated round-trip from his/her home to the meeting site. Additionally, Trustees are reimbursed for certain expenses when traveling as representatives of the Board on official board business.
