Lansing’s flavor of the month letter-grade system earns failing marks

By Dr. Vickie L. Markavitch, Superintendent, Oakland Schools

We’re hearing a lot from Lansing politicians these days about school accountability. The current flavor-of-the-month proposal being pushed in Lansing would assign a report card style letter grade to every school building and district in Michigan each year. On its face, this proposal seems commonsensical enough. Yet, a closer look at the school letter grade idea reveals how misguided and dangerous this notion of accountability can be for our students. To learn more about my thoughts on this, please watch my latest podcast  here.

Thank you,
